1.3 Ready for Day One

The last day of onboarding — less new content, more closing the loop. By the end of today the studio should be fully staffed and ready to open Monday.

Today's Checklist

  • ID card posted on the "Meet the Team" wall
  • Studio Bingo completed
  • Course site orientation walkthrough followed
  • New Hire Avatar created and saved
  • Studio Soundtrack song suggested

Task 1 — Culture Moment: Meet the Team Wall

Bring your printed New Hire ID Card up and add it to the "Meet the Team" wall as you arrive. Quick and low-key — this is about the room starting to feel like a staffed studio, not a formal activity.

Task 2 — Studio Bingo

A full-room mingling icebreaker — get up, move around, and talk to as many classmates as you can.

How to Play

  1. Everyone gets a Bingo card.
  2. Find a classmate who matches the description in a square, and have them write their initials in that box.
  3. You can't use the same person twice on your card.
  4. First to get 5 in a row (any direction — across, down, or diagonal) calls "Bingo!"
  5. Keep playing after the first winner — the goal is mingling time, not just one winner.

Your Bingo card is a printed handout — grab one at the front of the room.

Task 3 — Course Site Orientation

A short guided tour of the course site (code.codemathbike.ca/ict9) — follow along on your own screen while your teacher leads at the front. Quick reference below; here's the "Coles Notes" version so you always have it to check back on.

  • Sidebar (left) — click a unit to expand it, then click a lesson to open it.
  • Breadcrumbs (top of page) — show exactly where you are, e.g. ICT 9 > Unit 1 > Lesson 1.2.
  • Find today's lesson — from the homepage, in under 10 seconds via the sidebar.
  • Missed a class? — open the unit page, find the lesson you missed by date, and work through it the same way you would in class.

Task 4 — New Hire Avatar

Every studio needs a way to picture its people without splashing everyone's real photo across a site that'll eventually be public. Build a simple, stylized avatar in Canva — not a real photo — representing yourself as a new studio hire. It gets saved today and comes back in Unit 2 as the profile image on your portfolio site, so this isn't just a one-off — it's the start of a running identity thread.

  1. Open Canva and start a new design (square, e.g. 500×500 px).
  2. Search "avatar" or "character" in Elements and pick a base you like.
  3. Customize it — hair, colours, accessories, background — to feel like you.
  4. Download as a PNG.
  5. Save it into OneDrive → ICT 9 → Unit 1, right next to this week's other files.

⚠ Stylized avatar only — no real photos. This image will eventually appear on a public portfolio site, so a cartoon/illustrated avatar is the safer default for everyone.

Task 5 — Studio Soundtrack

A quick, low-effort way to start building the room's identity: everyone suggests five songs, and they all get combined into one big "Studio Playlist" — background music for independent work time for the rest of the semester.

  1. Find the Studio Soundtrack post in Teams.
  2. Reply with five song suggestions — artist and title for each.

Guidelines: good for focusing on work — clean lyrics (no swearing), nothing screamed or heavy-metal loud, and nothing too club/dance-energy. Think "background," not "hype." (Example: piano covers of popular songs are a great fit.)
